Noah Van Sciver & Joseph Remnant Book Release Party
Friday, October 13th
7-9pm
2 excellent cartoonists for the price of 1! Uh, the price is free, still. But yes, both Joseph Remnant and Noah Van Sciver will be joining us to celebrate the releases of their new books: Cartoon Clouds and Johnny Appleseed, respectively. Come by, have a drink, pick up a copy of each and get 'em signed!
On Johnny Appleseed:
The story of John Chapman operates as a counter-narrative to the glorification of violence, conquest, and prevailing notions of how the West was Won. It differentiates between the history and the half-myths of Johnny Appleseed’s life and work: His apples, for instance, were prized for many reasons, but none more so than for the making of hard cider. He was also a real estate speculator of sorts, purchasing potentially fertile but unproven acres and then planting saplings before flipping the land. Yet, he had less interest in financial gain―and yes, this is an accurate part of the mythology―than in spreading visions of peace and love. Johnny Appleseed brings this quintessentially American story to life in comics form.
On Cartoon Clouds:
Joseph Remnant’s first original graphic novel Cartoon Clouds follows the recent Art School graduate Seth Fallon and his three friends as they try to navigate that anxiety fueled time between finishing school and trying to figure out what the hell they’re going to do with the rest of their lives. With a mountain of debt and no clear path to financial or emotional stability, Seth struggles to find a creative direction that won’t leave him homeless. In this world of fashion conscious art snobs, talentless social media “gurus,” and drug addled, trust fund hipsters, he tries to hold on to the few meaningful relationships he has when the institution that held them together is no longer a part of their lives.
